The UK Government, not least the Foreign Secretary, William Hague, reaffirmed the importance of the region shortly after taking office by stating "Britain's retreat from the region is over and it is now time for an advance to begin. We will seek intensified and equal partnerships with countries in Latin America". The latter, combined with Colombian's growing strength in oil and minerals is helping to push this message abroad.
